Dan, thou art undone. CHOCOLATE FUDGE indeed??? Don't you ever dare
whine about dark toners again!!!

But I still regret not bidding for your ex-bass in A when it came up on
ebay. It did look gorgeous. But I thought I'd have had to kill too many
people before I got a chance to play it in a Wagner opera.

Very interesting about the different character of the A bass - I had
thought that there would be a relatively insignificant difference to the
Bb on an instrument that size, but evidently not.

Bass Clarinet in A

At one time they were simply available when you wanted them. Today you
have to special order them. When I played Nutcracker on an A bass, I
was a happy camper because a lot of crap that I had played for years in
difficult transpositions on the B-flat bass suddently became very easy.

But more important was the fact that the A bass had a magnificent
character. It was like playing on chocolate fudge.
