Subj: [kl] Buffet E-11 "C" clarinet problem
Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 01:04:59 -0500

I just got back from a rehearsal, where a friend showed up with his new C clarinet.

After he played several sections, I asked him to put the C away and play the rest of the piece on his Bb.

We examined the C clarinet after the rehearsal. Trying four different mouthpieces, and two different barrel, we still came up against throat tones that were 20 to 30 cents flat, when third line B and fourth line C were right on the button.

I checked the bore for any discontinuities. None - the barrels were fitted perfectly to the bore of the upper joint.

There was also a curious "stuffiness" to the horn, even though pad heights looked fine, if not too open.

Other than this one clarinet, I am not familar with the Buffet E-11/ Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Was there a good resolution?
