I was in the Santa Monica Symphonic Band, which plays for all the
important events of the City of Santa Monica. We were playing for the
annual Fourth of July Extravanganza, starting at 3:00pm on the promenade
above the beach on Ocean Avenue. I had been stuck in traffic so I was
late. I sat in the car fuming at the traffic. There were no parking
places anywhere, so I parked in the Mall parking lot, hoped that I
wouldn't get a ticket, (but I did) saw that that the time was 2:55.
Luckly, I had a pair of rollerskates in the trunk. I used to
rollerskate the boardwalk in Venice each Tuesday, my day off work. I
worked at JCPenney, as a Merchandising Manager, so had to work weekends,
but had days off during the week instead. So, I looked at the time,
strapped on the rollerskates, carefully rolled out of the parking
garage, and went off like a shot toward the ocean. I made it right in
time! I played first chair, so my seat was waiting for me on the
outside, I rolled down the hill, making a grand entrance, the conductor
Wally Umber raised his eyebrow for me as I put together just in time for
the downbeat of Stars and Stripes!
