I'd submit that even this is open to debate (as we have seen in past
sometimes heated Klarinet discussions), since most people use descriptives
like dark, bright, mellow, edgy, etc. without ever having been near any
kind of scientific measuring equipment. Even those you refer to might be
amazed to find out what exactly is in the tones they describe with these
words, because very few of us have ever had (or taken) the opportunity to
quantify our own definitions by testing them using modern laboratory
instrumentation. These adjectives were in use to describe tone quality long
before effective measuring devices existed. We have trouble communicating
with such words precisely because they are *not* necessarily based on any
agreements at all regarding measurable sound attributes.
