When I lived in Paris, I asked bothe Selmer and Buffet what was meant by
a "matched pair." What they told me, and I have no idea if it was true,
was that a matched pair came from the same tree, sometimes even the same
limb. In that way, the nature of the two instruments was related by
virtue of genetics, climate, and environmental factors.

I have no way to know if this is good or bad science. But that was what
the marketing term was.
