Matthew,
The Buffet is a nice eefer and plays well. I borrowed one last year for
Bolero, since mine was horribly flat. I have Leblanc Concertos, and the
difference in makes was not an issue. But when I upgraded my eefer
recently, I went for a Stephen Fox custom instrument. This is based on
Benade acoustic ideas and is a really nice instrument, better in tune
than anything I've played, and of course with superb workmanship. He'll
also make the keys to suit your hand shape. For example, I have fairly
broad fingers, so he made the Eb/Bb sliver key as narrow and out of the
way as possible to avoid accidental hits. The price is comparable with
Buffet, the quality better but delivery longer. He makes D's also. The
only oddity is NOT having to invent weird fingerings in the altissimo to
get it into tune!
I live in Warwick UK, and also get to London now and then. You'd be
welcome to try mine out. Email me offlist to make arrangements if you're
interested. Same goes for other listers in the UK.

I thought that I would introduce myself with a question!
I am a lawyer in London - public service not private so don't instantly
condemn me! - who plays clarinet/bass clarinet and is just about to
expand into Eb. I used to play Eb as a young man (I'm 36 now and until
the weekend hadn't played one for years!
Has anyone had any good experience of the Leblanc or the Buffet
Prestige? Those makes appeal as I would like to be able to add a D later
if the need appears and both make D clarinets to match. I know the
answer is to play as many as possible - but advice is also worth having.
I will be able to play a Leblanc Opus at my local shop but not a Buffet
for the time being as they are not coming from Paris.
My instinct is towards the Buffet RC as that is what my pair are.
Ideas anyone?
Matthew Lloyd
