When the clarinet was first invented, it was played by oboists. Since
they were used to a double reed, many of them played with the reed on top.
That actually became the prevalent Italian style of clarinet playing for a
number of years. If you ever visit fairly a isolated town in Italy, you
might see someone playing a clarinet with the reed on top.
Dr. Etheridge frequently uses this technique to correct articulation,
since you can't anchor tongue with the mouthpiece on the bottom.
