I had this happen with a flute...I set it on top of my car
after a rehearsal, and got to talking to our bassoon
guy for awhile. Then I got in the car and drove away.
I made it three or four miles before I turned a corner
and heard a clunk, clunk clunk.....still didn't register
with me right away~ thought it was a soda can rolling
around in the back of the car or something.......
I drove another mile or so before I realized it was my flute!
It was 9:00 in the evening, on a stretch of hiway with
NO streetlights. I had to walk back and forth in the middle of the
road in the dark. Couldn't see a thing until someone would
drive by, then I'd have the light from their headlights for a
second or two.
Finally found all three joints, and the SMASHED case.
I was lucky, it had only been run over once, then all three
sections kinda bounced into the center turning lane, where
it was reasonably safe.
Thank goodness it was not a total loss, just the left-hand keys were
pretty well flattened, a few scratches.
