The worst thing I ever had happen is that my clarinet bell fell off =
while
marching in the 1977 Bicentennial parade with my high school band at =
Disney
World. One of the chaperones picked it up but I marched the rest of the
parade without the bell. The bell had some large chips that couldn't be
repaired and I had to get a new bell.
I also once put a black ring on a new dress just before a concert. =
The
dress was mint green and I had some trouble getting the upper and lower
joint together. For some reason, I used my hip as a brace to try to =
hold
the instrument steady while I tried to jam the two pieces together. I =
ended
up with a perfect round black ring which was very noticeable on the =
front of
a mint green dress.
I also had a coughing "fit" during one orchestra concert I had. I =
had
tried cough medicine and a steroidal inhaler from my doc with no =
success.
Everything was OK until an "attack" struck me halfway through the =
concert
and I couldn't play. I even resorted to drinking the water I had my =
reeds
soaking in to try to stop the coughing but it didn't work very well.
On another occasion before an audition, the clasp on my clarinet case
came loose and opened as I was getting out of my car. The clarinet =
parts
spilled out all over my van and I couldn't find my ligature anywhere. =
It
was dark and the ligature was black. I did eventually find it-after the
audition. Needless to say, the audition didn't go very well. Someone
loaned me a ligature to use and when I went to put it on my mouthpiece I
discovered it was a bass clarinet ligature! I had been so nervous and
rattled I hadn't even noticed when it was handed to me.

What is the funniest or worst musical instrument accident you know of.

I had a friend that rode a motorcycle to rehearsals with this trombone
strapped on back.
One night after rehearsal when he got home the trombone was not there. =
He
retraced his route on the freeways and found the instrument on the side =
of
the road. Someone else's car did a modern art project with it.
