OK, maybe everyone should back off a bit. Rebecca has brought us into a
family dispute that probably should have remained within her family. The
name-calling that has been directed toward her parents may or may not be on
target, but none of us knows them nor do we have the history with them that
Rebecca has. Characterizing them to their daughter (and, worse, suggesting
she use these comments as ammo to carry with her into battle with them) is,
in my opinion, completely out of line.

Rebecca, you are certainly old enough to understand that people don't always
mean the worst of what they say in anger. We don't know anything about your
relationship with them before this happened, but you do. Whether they are
generally cruel, often unreasonable and over-reactive people, or they were
just having a new-car reaction (as Bill Wright suggested) that they are
likely to get over in a few days, only you'd know. This is basically a
family spat. Whether or not it's more serious and will be more lasting than
that depends on your family relationships. You brought it to the list out of
anger, I suspect, and an attempt to blow off some of your steam. We,
however, really have no business meddling in it - it's between you and your
parents. It's one thing for us to have reacted sympathetically to your
accident. It's another for us to be attacking your parents.

To the rest of the list members who have criticized Rebecca's parents
without knowing anything about them or their ongoing relationship with their
daughter, I would respectfully suggest that this is not like criticizing a
band director (although I'm now starting to re-think that as well) for
insisting on 5RV mouthpieces.

My opinion, for what it's worth...
