Rebecca, I'm speaking to you as a parent who, like any other parent, has
(once or twice) applied heavy-handed discipline and then regretted it
later on.

All human beings, parents included, can recover their composure so long
as you don't back them into an inescapable corner during the first few
moments.

How many times have you heard an adult cursing when they put the first
dent in their new $20,000 car? This is a similar situation. So long
as you don't do anything irrevocable, the scratch will appear minor a
couple of weeks from now, and your parents' concerns will fade if you
just allow them to do so.

Your Buffet is not truly damaged. For example, my own clarinet is more
than just scratched. It is cracked, and the glue and pins to repair it
are easily visible. As I've posted before, a local technician --- who
is arguably the best in town --- has the same model and manufacturer of
clarinet as I do, plus a Selmer and a Buffet and probably a few others,
but he likes my cracked & glued & pinned clarinet better and he has
asked to buy mine if I ever quit playing.

As they advised in West Side Story, "cool, easy does it, cooly
cool....".

Cheers,
Bill
