What I'm thinking about is starting with a 'junker' barrel, which I
assume I can find somewhere, that is larger than a Bb barrel. Then I
can fill it with putty in various ways, such that I will end up with
approximately the same volume as a Bb barrel but different interior
shapes.

I can't convince myself that experimenting with ping pong balls or 35 mm
film cannisters will provide useful information.
