This is yet more interesting.
I should say upfront that I receive the digest version of this list, so I
can't answer in real time. I would have done some things differently if I'd
been able to read everything that had been written when I sent my messages.
At this point my last message is the last message in the digest, so I have no
clue to any other responses you may have given.
I'll just say that Tony's mention of 'coupling' seems important. This is the
sort of thing I meant by a second order effect. I agree that it shouldn't
affect basic vibration modes but it might affect artifacts that people hear
that fool them into thinking something not true.
Interestingly, Tony's results, which I did not have to read before, agree
somewhat with mine. I like that. It is a measure of good technique and
pretty clear communication. Tony says:
<We found that the overblown pitch is highly labile, in the sense that
you can achieve an octave, and with a different embouchure also less
than an octave; but you can also bend the top note at least a fourth
higher without changing the mode of oscillation.

What that indicates to me is that the reed and tube aren't strongly
coupled, so the description 'overblows an octave' is undermined.
Something that overblows over such a wide range isn't really
'overblowing' at all.>

I believe his 'less than an octave' is the same as the A4 I got. Am I right?
However, I believe the note I got above the octave, F or F#5, is really a
different mode, as was the A5 above that. Does this mean I somehow 'coupled'
the reed better to the clarinet? I guess that on more careful reading of the
above, our results may be quite different. I was definitly getting different
modes........ Intersting. What fun to compare side by side.

Also, thanks Mark, for the reminder about the new website. I knew that I had
recently skimmed something about acoustics that I needed to study better, but
I had forgotten what it was.
