I re-read some Benade because I continue to imagine that he commented on
this topic.

What I found this time was Benade's description of "octave sneak".

I'm wondering if the 'register change'' that Dan and others have heard
is a truly the next highest register (the next highest vibration mode),
or is it an "octave sneak"?

Apparently "octave sneak" is common for conical instruments during a
diminuendo. Basically it is a drastic reduction of the fundamental
partial such that a partial that is one octave higher predominates and
our ears 'hear' that the tone has jumped an octave, when in fact the
'register' has not changed.

And thus I'm wondering if the larger cavity and other side effects of
jury rigging a double reed to a clarinet are causing an "octave sneak"
rather than a "register change"?

Cheers,
Bill
