It's not, after all, anything to do with the clarinet for most of its
length. Like the Ebony Concerto, it was written for a band; that both
pieces include a clarinet spot for the leader of that band is
historically proper, but musically incidental.

(...though perhaps in our own interest, it's wise not to say so too much
around concert promoters;-)
