This is not 'advice' --- it's a 'comment'. I'm not a knowledgeable
repairman, and I don't want to be responsible for a cracked clarinet,
but:
It seems to me that storing the instrument in a dry environment (perhaps
a thoroughly air conditioned room?) for a month or so (you mentioned
that the humidity is high in Durban) may be a gentler way of reversing
any swelling that may have occurred. Heating the ring seems a risky
and perhaps ineffective way to proceed (imo, of course).
