Joe,

I have a surgeon friend who is now retired and he plays the bassoon (a
Heckel bassoon). He has always made his own pads from silicone. He uses
Teflon tape to bind his handmade reeds with and then paints fancy designs on
them. He pads bassoons for some very well known professional bassoonists
who wish to remain anonymous. Why, I can't tell you. If I had a solution
like this to pad problems, I would market it pronto. He has asked if he
could pad my clarinets for me, but I have cork pads and they are fine right
now. I did tell him though, that if the cork pads go bad, he will be the
first to try the silicone pads on my instrument. Three cheers for ya!

Nancy
