I think to the uninitiated, there ought to be a difference in how music is
catalogued. The Rossini is a perfect example. It was only discovered in the
1960's, but it is an ORIGINAL work by Rossini for clarinet and orchestra.
The Rossini that was shipped to to Rebecca was an ARRANGEMENT, for clarinet
and piano, of Rossini music that was NOT originally conceived for the clarinet.
It seems to me that an enterprising music distributor might take up this
mantle and divide original scores from arrangements. Therefore, we would know
that Bartok's Contrasts were ORIGINALLY written for clarinet, violin and piano.
All the other Bartok arrangements by Balassa and others may be good, but they
ARE arrangements - not original compositions by the composer.
