The sax is built in octaves and doesn't have the same intonation problems as the
clarinet. In fact a good sax doesn't have intonation problems if you use the
correct embouchure but it will allow you enough flexibility to raise or lower
pitch at will by making slight changes inside the oral cavity (back of tongue
and/or upper palette), air support or as a last resort with a change of
embouchure pressure. Don't try to play a sax with a clarinet embouchure, it
doesn't get a characteristic tone for the sax.

(I'd like to hear from some sax players about comparative differences between
the alto and tenor embouchure in relation to tone, you may include the role of
the different styles of mouthpieces). I use a Selmer C* on alto and a D metal on
tenor.
