always pulls out between the upper and lower joints of his clarinet, to
avoid sharpness in the lower chalumeau.

Tony Pay has told us that he has done this also; and at the bell, in
addition to all other joints. Slightly off topic, but saxophonists cannot do
this, they can only pull off at the mouthpiece. I s`pose they could at the
crook, but I have never come across this. Now it`s possible that the conical
shape of the sax may have some bearing on this, in so far as it may not be
necessary to pull out anywhere else, always supposing one could, i.e. a
middle joint.
The sax`s intonation is much more flexible (the lip/jaw will bring the pitch
up or down more easily) than that of the clarinet, so I`m wondering if the
conical bore *actually*, (scientifically), reduces the need to pull out in
any area other than the mouthpiece.
If the sax were to have a top and bottom joint, to pull out here would in
fact destroy the gradual increasing of it`s shape, making it parallel for
the amount pulled out - obviously then, the reason for it`s *one* body part.
So - what intonation problems would/could there be (I`ve never played one,
altho` I`ve played along side one) on the tarragoto - clarinet problems, or
less so saxophone problems?
Can one learn from the other?
