Ben Freimuth is not only a fine clarinetist, but perhaps the best bass
clarinetist, I've ever heard. He is one of the few clarinetists, who began
his studies on the bass clarinet, which was his primary instrument at the
Interlochen Arts Academy. Ben and I shared a few years together as students
at the Cleveland Institute, where his primary teacher was Linnea Nereim, who
is the Cleveland Orchestra's bass clarinetist. Ben was already the most
natural bass clarinetist I ever heard when he came to CIM as a freshman. He
spent a great deal of time in his early studies trying to achieve parity
between his soprano clarinet and bass clarinet chops. Well his successes in
the clarinet world are proof that he achieved his goal in spades. That he is
returning to his "first" voice is a blessing to the clarinet world. I have
no doubt that he will easily prove to be the greatest bass clarinetist this
country has ever seen, which I hope consoles all those in Kansas City who
will be losing their gifted principal clarinetist.
