Deidre,

What is the brand of your instrument?

I can offer three things:

1) Your instrument might be short at the top of the upper main joint.
Many student models are modified this way. The two solutions are to get
a longer barrel (longer than 66 mm) and/or pull and insert tuning rings
until the pitch of the throat tones lower to an acceptable pitch level.

2) Try testing the tuning using different mouthpieces. Some mouthpieces
cause sharpness in certain areas. I've seen this with some Vandoren
mouthpieces.

3) The open height of the those pads that effect throat tone tuning
might be too great. The pads that might need lowering are the top ring
key (pad cup under the A key), the G# and A keys, and the Bb register
key. The Bb/register key should open less than the thickness of a US
dime.
