Spencer,

Does it have to work as a full case in its own right?
If you are looking to put it inside a briefcase, perhaps you could
get a cheap case, throw away the exterior, and just use the inserts
inside your briefcase? (You could make a thin - even cardboard -
shell to hold the inserts in place. A "shoebox clarinet case"). Or
you could get some appropriate foam and make your own inserts.

Another alternative might be the bassbags clarinet case
(http://www.bassbags.co.uk).
>From the outside, this looks very much like a flute case, with a case
cover (often people think I have arrived at a gig with a flute), and only
measures around 15x5x4 inches. It is very convenient, but does not offer
much protection - it is basically canvas and foam, with some rigid
(hardboard?) pieces on the two sides only. Also the clarinet is mostly
assembled - you only split it in two at the middle joint. However, I am
not sure whether it will fit an A clarinet, since it's designed to be just
about the smallest possible case for a Bb.

Another option is to split the clarinet in two at the middle joint,
and roll it inside a towel. This is a common technique for a fine
clarinet player known to both myself and Keith Bowen, and I have used it
on occassion.

I hope this gives you some useful ideas.

Bernie
