Freimuth is a seriously fine clarinetist - I've not heard him on bass
clarinet, but what I've heard of him in attending the KC Symphony for
the last couple of years has really been impressive.

In fact, another clarinetist and I (both with season tickets for the
same performances) have decided that his pianissimo is "to die for" :-)
(for whatever reason, we both tend to weight a good pianissimo heavily
when discussing clarinetists).

For those of you that may not know, the San Francisco Symphony bass
clarinet audition was yesterday (March 10).

The only person that "qualified" was Ben Freimuth, now principal
clarinet
in Kansas City. The other two finalists were both from San Francisco -
Mark Shannon and Jerome Simas.

Ben will have to come out and play a couple of weeks with the
orchestra
(probably during the summer) and if the conductor likes his playing THEN
he
will be offered probationary contract.
