Elizabeth, Sounds like fun! I happen to live in central Wisconsin and =
have
no Jewish friends. We have lots of cows and the Marshfield Clinic here.
Also lots of Amish folks who ride into town with their horses and =
buggies.
The most hilarious scene I've ever witnessed though since moving here =
was
the day I saw a group of Amish and Mennonite people in town. A =
Mennonite
man was driving a tractor (an Amish man was standing behind the seat of =
the
tractor) and hitched to the tractor was a trailer that had been made =
out of
the rear end of a pickup truck. Seats had been placed in the trailer =
and
the seats were filled with a group of Amish people.(they do take rides =
in
motorized vehicles) This contraption was pulling into the McDonalds's
driveup window and of course at the entrance to the McDonald's there is =
a
rather steep incline to get past and this tractor and trailer slowly =
bumped
it's way over the hump with all these folks swaying back and forth in =
that
rickety trailer. Don't know what they ordered but I wish I had had a =
video
camera in my hands. I would have sent it to America's Funniest Videos.

Purim (pronounced "pour-im") is a celebration of when the Jews were =
saved
from Haman, an evil man who was going to kill all of them. Esther, the =
wife
of the king (and the king loved her VERY VERY VERY much), was Jewish =
(which
the king did not know), and the king thought that the Jews were bad, so =
he
said that Haman could do whatever he wanted with them. So then Esther =
fasted
for a day or so, gathered up her courage and prayed a whole lot, then =
told
the king that she was Jewish and that Haman wanted to kill her people. =
So
the King had Haman killed, and the Jews were saved. Now we celebrate
Esther's heroic deed (hah! women really CAN do great things. with the =
help
of God, of course!!!!!) by reading the Megillah (book of Esther, which =
is in
the old testament of the Bible), eating Hamantaschen (sorry that I =
spelled
that wrong, but it's a triangle type of pastry with fruit in the =
middle),
getting a little tipsy (well, the adults do), making lots of noise
(especially when the name Haman is mentioned in order to stomp out the =
evil
name of Haman), reading Torah, going to worship and prayer services at
Temple, giving out food baskets, donating to the poor, it's kind of like
Mardi Gras and Thanksgiving and 4th of July in one day (March 18). It's =
one
of the most fun Jewish holidays, we are commanded to have a load of fun.
Celebrate with Jewish friends if you can, it's AWESOME!
