Our quintet is currently in the middle of our school tours. We did Peter and the Wolf a couple of years ago, and, yes, it works quite well. You'll need a narrator in addition to the quintet members. When we did it, we made these goofy hats to represent our characters - as the cat, I had a headband with black cat ears from a Halloween costume. The bassoonist wore a fake beard as Grandfather, but the horn player's wolf hat really stole the show! We used to start the show with a short piece, then introduce our individual instruments - each of us would talk a little and play an excerpt. "Peter" took up the remainder of the time, with a question-and-answer period at the end.
The current show consists of Copland's "Ching-a-Ring-Chaw", Grainger's "Walking Tune", Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen", D'Rivera's "Wapango", and the Stars and Stripes Forever (last year it was Joplin's "Ragtime Dance" with added sound effects). We have 3 narrators who travel with us and act out an original story that ties the music together. There are also interactive parts for the kids - previously selected students help with dance and rhythm instrument parts during the show. The whole presentation takes about a half hour.
