In the early '50s, I, at 17, and my clarinet playing buddy, Julius, aged 16,
went the Blue Note in Chicago, then in a basement venue to see a Benny
Goodman combo. I guess the fellow at the door looked at the size of us and
decided he didn't want any trouble. We sat in the back corner, sipped soft
drinks (as promised) and soaked in a master-filled combo, which included Don
Elliott on mellophone and doubled on vibes in a cutting contest. The next
year the club had moved upstairs. Goodman was back. My 17 year-old
girlfriend had an ID which said she was 23. They wouldn't let me it. I guess
one out of two for underage 'ain't' bad.
The once Los Angeles Classic Jazz Festival, now the Sweet and Hot is a very
popular annual event since its inception in 1984 The musicianship is top
drawer, and the attendants very appreciative.
