The clarinet opening of the Gershwin Rhapsody In Blue has been the subject
of at least on excellent study presented at ClarFest. At the rehearsal the
conductor objected to the smear, because it was not written that way.
Gershwin liked the improvisation and preserved it. While you practice it,
consider that Abe Most also used to glissando downward as a smear. Oy!
That's difficult.
I plan to be in New York City, a first trip, in about 2 weeks. The flight
and the accommodations were paid before the strike. Hopefully the visually
impaired, who see only the bottom line, will relent so live MUSICAL theater
will triumph.
Are there any open jazz jam sets? In Southern California there are
several Sunday afternoon clubs which were originally formed to preserve
trad jazz. With attrition, the audience has had to accept some slightly more
progressive styles.
