Subj: [kl] New York Theater Strike
Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 18:22:23 -0500

I just heard a short (30 second) blip on the local dinner time TV news
reporting an imminent strike by Local 802 theater pit musicians in New York.
At the end of the blip the reporter said that all the theaters (13, I think)
that were affected had announced that the shows would go on, but possibly
with recorded accompaniment tracks if the strike actually takes place.

Never mind for now the pros and cons of such a strike for the musicians. I'm
curious as to whether it would be possible for a theater employing Equity
actors/singers and union stage crews to stage anything while being picketed
by AFM. I realize there was probably much more left unsaid by the reporter,
who had very little time on air. Is the history that the unions in New York
theaters honor each others' picket lines or cross them?

Very curious...
