David, Thanks for the note. I have many great studies for clarinet
technique (Russ Dagon made sure of that then I studied with him back in
college) but I've found that nothing helps more than keeping my fingers =
in
shape on the keys. My piano has a very heavy action and I always notice
that the difficult passages on my clarinet are much easier if I'm =
keeping up
with the piano also. You're absolutely correct that piano music is much
more difficult to read and I have very good sight reading skills also. =
I
suppose that's one big reason I don't practice much since I'm usually =
not
playing anything I need to work at very much. That's why I'm looking
forward to our performance on Sunday and hope we can schedule some more =
like
this. It's so nice to have something to "dig into" once in awhile.
Do you have as much trouble keeping up with both instruments as I =
do. I
always feel very split with my time and the piano does require more
practice. It sure comes in handy when I accompany my clarinet students.

Hi Christy, I studied Piano at the University Level with Alexander =
Fiorillo
who was one of the only five students whom Vladimir Horowitz taught. I =
find
that Piano and Clarinet are quite different. There are many great =
studies
which will improve your Clarinet Technique with hard work. As you wrote =
that
your practicing time is limited or has been, I'm wondering that if you
practiced more on Clarinet your technique would improve as well. My
sight-reading is quite strong and possibly that was from the Piano
background as Piano music is much harder to read than Clarinet.
