It depends a lot on the school. I went to a small liberal arts college
that charged a comprehensive fee, so we didn't pay by credit. They were
extremely stingy on transferring AP or other credits. I knew people who
did AP theory, and passed the test (4s and 5s) yet ended up in Music 110 -
Introduction to the Study of Music, which is the course before the theory
cycle starts. You had to really, really beg and plead to start in theory
1 (and even then they'd likely turn you down), and there was absolutely no
chance they'd let you skip that and start in theory 2.

In terms of my experience, I had tested out of general chemistry via AP
(no credits, just placement into organic), but thought it would be good to
"review" the course my first term in college. Suffice it to say, I nearly
failed the class because it the material was so much more difficult
(same basic concepts, but substantially more thorough) than what the AP
teaches.

In other words, if transferring AP credits is important to you, make sure
you research it. Every school will list their policies in their course
catalog, and most of those are online these days.
