Angelina,

First of all, congratulations on getting a 5 on your AP exam! Though I didn't specifically take music theory, I took several honors/AP classes in HS and the subsequent exams. I also transferred in a few credits that I took at the university in my hometown. Thanks to the AP exams and other test-outs, I'm finishing my bachelors in only 2.5 years.

In looking at colleges, it seemed that most will give credit for AP exams if you have a score of 4 or 5 and sometimes 3. The transfer credits required some extra paper work, but Wartburg gave me credit for all my ISU classes. However, my transfer credits will not affect my GPA. Policies do vary among colleges, and some will require a placement test (as others have mentioned). I'm not sure about other colleges, but I know Wartburg offers challenge exams for many of the 100 and 200 level classes. For those, I took an exam that would be equivalent to the final exam for the class.

To get a straight answer about how the credits transfer, I would type the following into google or another good search engine: AP exam college name. So, for Wartburg I'd do: AP exam Wartburg. Usually that'll get you someplace, especially because google can search through Adobe Acrobat documents as well as web sites. Ditto for transfer credits, except enter: transfer credit college name. (Use the name of the college to which you want to transfer the credits.) Other good sources for answers include the college catalog and registar's office.

Once you get some answers, how the college will treat your credits may be a factor in deciding where you go; it definitely was for me. In the event that you won't be able to transfer the credit, it might be a good idea to go ahead and take the college class now anyway. It'll make it easier when you take the class again in "real" college, and it looks good on college applications to say that you've had experience taking college courses. Depending on your state, your high school might have to pay for it.

Hopefully that's helpful!!

Meridith
