Or find one that auditions all comers for different groups. One of my kids
plays trumpet in the U of Mich jazz band, though he's a math major. The
placement is totally audition and "need of the band" based. He tried out on
a lark and made it in.

The rest of the jazz band is comprised of music majors, both undergrad &
grad.
