They are complex synths that are run by one or two people, can follow
singers automatically, have an incredible number of samples, etc. They don't
play recordings, but follow an (electronically mastered) orchestration with
the samples. Since they play sampled instruments, you could perhaps stretch
the definition of "play recordings" but they're a lot more sophisticated
than that.

The "average person" can tell the difference between the virtual orchestra
and a real one; however, considering that some people think that the theme
from "Law & Order" has a real clarinet playing, I'm not so sure about that.
