There's no clear dividing line. Crude oil is seldom used "as is", as
it come out of the ground. So where do you draw the line between
"purifying" and "synthesizing"? (much of refining involves chemical
reactions, not just separating components by distillation)

The motive behind your question would help someone give you a more
specific answer. If you're thinking that "synthesized" is more (or
less) likely to damage your health, this is probably not accurate.
