Kelly doesn't even mention parking. When my aunt was trying to get me
to move to Manhatton in the 80s, apartments started at $800, a room at
the YMCA was $400 and parking for her car (with 24 hour notice to get
it out) was $375... I shudder to think what it costs now.
I live in San Francisco and came to the same conclusion. It cost me
$250/month just to have legal license plates and insurance. That
didn't count parking or the cost of the car or maintenance or gas. I
can take lots of cabs, commuter trains and buses for $300/month and
rent a car for $40/day if I have to.
Of course, you can probably on do this in 4-5 cities in the US, but it
is a nice option if you can. I don't miss driving 45 in rush hour
after an 11 hour day of hell at work at *all*.
