Everyone seems to have missed the best sheet music source in the US (with the
possible exception of Eble). It's FRANK MUSIC located on 50th St. between
Broadway and 8th ave. (They used to be on 61st and moved when the building was
torn down). If memory serves they are in the 405 building (safer to look it up
in the phone book) and they carry tons of stuff Patelson's has no idea exists.
Furthermore, they are MUCH more knowledgeable than Patelson's and will get you
anything that can be gotten. While they have virtually no browsing room, the
stuff they do have will floor you. Frank Music is where all the Pros shop
because they (like I did when I lived in NY) got tired of Patelson's always
being out of stuff and rarely having good editions of standard works (instead
of, e.g. off-brand, highly edited versions of the Mozart K.622).
On the non-musical side, there is a decent Italian restaurant called Ralph's
at 58th and 8th. It is a mob hangout so the food is really good. If they are
still there, Ray-Bari pizza at Amsterdam and 71st St. has arguably the
second-best pizza in NY (the best is, of course, Ray's at 6th ave. and 11th st.)
