Sue,

It *IS* an hour cab ride. Have you priced an hour cab ride where
you live? NYC cabs are some of the most REASONABLE ones in the
world. I can get around the bottom 2/3s of Manhattan in most
instances for under $10 and usually under $5 for most midtown
things.

Things in NYC aren't always necessarily as expensive as what
people think. If you buy souvenirs in Times Square, you pay 2x
to 3x as much as you would in Chinatown for the same things.
Everything in NYC has a different price that is relative to the
location of the store in Manhattan. The grocery store near me
charges $8 a pound for boneless/skinless chicken breasts, but if
I go to the butcher in Hell's Kitchen, I pay only $1.78/lb AND
they are fresher.

I can (and have) lived in Manhattan on $20K a year before...last
year, to be exact, while I was out of work. It can be done. Just
takes a little perseverance.
