Well, I don't know if they are "god" (hehe) but they aren't half
bad... <evilgrin>

"Watkins Music" in "The Music Store" at 44 West 62nd Street
(actually on Columbus to enter store.) Phone is 212-541-9146.

Frederick Weiner Music is in Mineola, NY now, but within an
hour. The website is www.weinermusic.com for number and
directions. If you don't have a car, don't bother with them.
They are NOT very public transportation accessible to NYC, and a
cab would be $50 each way from NYC. The public transportation
route is actually more expensive costwise. The train to Mineola
is about $8 each way per person and then you would have to pay
at least $5 (or more) each way in a cab from the train station
to the store. (Cab in Long Island charges by the person, not a
flat rate or metered rate.) That is $26 per person to go there,
or $52 for the two of you. If you have a rental car, it is
rather accessible by the roads...about an hour out of the city.

D'addario Vandoren Studio at 250 West 54th Street on the 6th
floor. David Gould is great to help out with mouthpiece and reed
selections, plus other Vandoren accessories. Charges go to the
store of your choice, since he is a vendor, not a retailer. 212
399-9457 ONLY on Mondays and Fridays, and you should call to
make sure he is in that day. Maybe even call in advance to set
up a definite meeting.

Frank Music is at 250 West 54th Street on the 10th floor. Great
to browse for sheet music. Same building as the D'addario
Vandoren Studio. M-F 212 582-1999.

Joseph Pedelson Music (can't find the number or specific
address) is directly behind Carnegie Hall on 56th Street, across
from the stage door. Sheet music with method books and sheet
music downstairs, with a second floor that has most orchestral
parts.

If you have time, set up an appointment with Guy Chadash, since
you can actually see and play his instruments, and could custon
pick a barrel for your clarinet if you need to. He also would be
amiable to just letting you try out things while you watch him
make instruments. A good guy too. His website with number and
address is http://www.chadashclarinet.com/ and he is VERY near
Port Authority bus terminal and Times Square subway station.

There are a few good saxophone shops here, so drop me a line if
you want info on those. If you want to travel an hour or so
upstate, Nora Post is a huge double reed reseller in New Paltz,
NY while The Laubin oboe company is up there too.

99% of the retail stores in Times Square area will RIP YOU OFF,
along with the food places, the stores, etc. You don't want to
BUY anything there. Anything you can get there can be gotten for
1/2 the price or less somewhere else.

Hope that helps. Drop me a line when you are in town and let's
get together for lunch! Would love to meet more people from the
list!
