Hi Jim. Has your student complained to you of any pain or stiffness in his
jaw joint(s) when playing? When I was in college, I had a significant
problem with TMJD, enough so that I was under treatment at the Cleveland
Clinic in their Performing Artist's Program. The alto saxophone caused me
much more discomfort than did the clarinet, probably because of the angle of
the mouthpiece. To compensate, I did all sorts of weird things with my
embochure (biting, moving, etc.) and air flow, which in turn caused the
instrument to react strangely. I hope for your student's sake that this
isn't the problem, but I thought you might want to consider it.

Suzanne :)
