This brings back memories for me.

When I was in the Army in Germany, I visited the Heckel "factory" in
Wiesbaden.

I say "factory" because it was actually an old house of about 3-4 floors
that sat on the corner directly on the bank of the Rhine river.

The people we talked to were quite polite, but when my friend (who played
bassoon) asked if he could see their work shop, became quite silent. They
would not allow us into their workshops due to secrets of the trade we were
told.

I really did come away feeling that this was a company that had a very long
history of hand craftsmanship and the owners were quite dedicated to the
quality of their product.

That was in 1975, and the waiting list for a new one was still over two
years then.

Heckel! That's the bassoon company. It took me a few more minutes than I
thought it would. Whew! Now I can sleep tonight.
