Bill,

Saint Saens' dates were from 1835-1921. Boehm clarinets appeared
around 1840 ish? He theoretically could have had a boehm
clarinets available to him most of his life then, so period
instruments wouldn't HAVE TO be graphically different than our
modern ones, would they? I know Albert system and Mueller (sp?)
system clarinets were still being used for quite a while after
1840, but they weren't as drastically different from boehm
clarinets as the ones from the 1700s were from boehm system.

I fully agree with the Saint Saens assessment. Wonderful stuff.
