Bud Bibbins IS Freelon Bibbins and he is still very much alive and still
plays great. I play clarinet quartets with him , Don Carroll (recently
retired bass clarinetist with the SF Symphony) and anyone we can find to
play 3rd clarinet - very often Jim Matheson who is the principal oboe with
the SF Opera.

Bud Bibbins was 2nd clarinet in the SF Symphony to his father (starting in
1948 I believe). He eventually became asst. Principal and Eb when the
orchestra moved to a 4 man section some time in the 60's. He retired from
the Symphony in 1980 and was replaced very briefly by a very young Greg
Smith.

Bud was one of a handful of students who studied with Reginald Kell after
he (Kell) moved to Carmel. Bud played the old Boosey & Hawkes 1010
clarinets for years and was famous for his beautiful, warm sound. He is an
incredible talent and to this day is one of the best "readers" I have ever
met. Bud is a real "renaissance man". He paints in an abstract
expressionist style, is a collector and authority on African and tribal art
and composes and arranges.
