Subj: [kl] For Elizabeth - being funny in writing

Elizabeth, to give you an idea of just how difficult it is to be funny
in writing, I tell you the following true story.

The great French writer, Anatole France, was dying. He lay in his death
bed in extremis, though he could talk.

An old friend came to see him. Taking France's hand in his, he said,
"Anatole, old friend of my youth. I am so sorry to see you ill. But
tell me. Is it hard to die?"

France opened one eye, looked at his friend and said, "Dying is easy.
Comedy is difficult."

So if you are misinterpreted when you write comedy, join the club. It's
hard to do it well.

Dan
