Subj: [kl] Rebuilding NEW clarinets

I can speak for the Stephen Fox instruments, since I had a basset joint
last year and recently an Eb. The setup is incredibly good, and I would
not dream of sending them anywhere else to be rebuilt. In fact, he also
reconditioned my Leblanc Concertos last year and several professionals
have commented that they are the best Leblancs they have played. Steve
stayed with me in Prague recently when he delivered the eefer (an eefer
that plays in tune :-)) and he used my clarinets as well as another he
had brought, to demonstrate to a group of (brilliantly good) Czech
professionals. They were most impressed, and I had difficulty in
repossesing them!

I think that a superbly setup instrument is one of the things you expect
from any custom builder. Materials is another; Steve swears by Valentino
pads and suede leather (instead of cork).

The only problem with the clarinets is that I don't have any excuses any
more!

Some years ago, an accomplished east coast performer/teacher, described
in The Clarinet all of the burning hoops through which he had to jump to
purchase a $7000+ clarinet, including a very large down payment,
travel to company in Germany, prior to completion, to make sure he was
worthy of the manufacturer's effort, and having to accept a whole new
style of mouthpiece. When he finally took possession of it, he brought
it back to the USA and delivered it to his repairman to make sure it was
set up as well as could be done. I wish I could remember the details.
Probably by tomorrow someone on the list will clarify my recollections.
I hear that even Michelle Zukovsky, who relearned fingering to be able
to play a Wurlitzer, has tape in the toneholes. There have been
complaints regarding the new instruments by the big three or four. Would
the purchasers of new instruments from custom builders like Guy Chadash,
Stephan Fox, and Luis Rossi (alphabetical
order) care to comment. In reading between the lines on this site, they
seem to be very happy. Al Nemiroff
