Subj: [kl] Rebuilding NEW clarinets.
Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 04:02:31 -0500

Some years ago, an accomplished east coast performer/teacher, described in
The Clarinet all of the burning hoops through which he had to jump to
purchase a $7000+ clarinet, including a very large down payment, travel to
company in Germany, prior to completion, to make sure he was worthy of the
manufacturer's effort, and having to accept a whole new style of
mouthpiece. When he finally took possession of it, he brought it back to the
USA and delivered it to his repairman to make sure it was set up as well as
could be done. I wish I could remember the details. Probably by tomorrow
someone on the list will clarify my recollections. I hear that even Michelle
Zukovsky, who relearned fingering to be able to play a Wurlitzer, has tape
in the toneholes. There have been complaints regarding the new instruments
by the big three or four. Would the purchasers of new instruments from
custom builders like Guy Chadash, Stephan Fox, and Luis Rossi (alphabetical
order) care to comment. In reading between the lines on this site, they
seem to be very happy.
