Sorry for seemingly ignoring your mouthpiece question a week or
so... I was out of town and didn't have access to a computer
most of the time...

The 2RV is an OLD mouthpiece that hasn't been made in a while. I
believe the discussion before on the list was it was supposed to
be the new 5RV (no Lyre) and also remembering seeing that very
statement on the Vandoren site once a while back. Discussion
previously about the 2RV is that is requires a MUCH softer reed,
maybe as soft as a 2.5 or 3, if you were playing a 3.5-4 before.

Could I ask why you bought this particular mouthpiece if you
know you have two MAJOR negatives to say about the way it plays
for you?

If it doesn't play like you want, try another of the same model.
If that one doesn't play how you like either, try another model
or brand. It could take a long while to narrow it down unless
you know what *you* are looking for specifically (and can put it
into words) but I would NEVER buy a mouthpiece that squeaks,
period. If you need to ask about the differences in mouthpieces,
go to a larger store in Chicago, NY, LA, San Fran, etc, or go to
a mouthpiece maker like Walter or Clark on the list who can make
a mouthpiece to fit you, or match you to the mouthpiece best
suited to you.

Try the softer reed on the 2RV before you do anything else. If
this doesn't help, take it back and exchange it, or buy one
somewhere else...possibly a different brand or at least a
different model. If the store questions the return, explain to
them you have purchased a mouthpiece that hasn't been made by
Vandoren for years, and you want a refund. Worst case scenario
is you can call David Gould at D'Addario in Manhattan who is the
Vandoren distributor (doesn't sell directly, but sells through
stores locally like a vendor at a music festival.) He can at
least swap out a Vandoren for a Vandoren, as long as it isn't
scratched from the ligature or teeth. Try a piece of masking
tape on the top of the mouthpiece and use a fabric ligature
until you know it is what you want.

If the softer reed fixes the problem, relax and bask in the joy
of the new mouthpiece!
