Our school district has a new superintendent and he has this
"great" idea
that will help us do better on our tests. We will take these
little
examinations every few weeks and when we don't get an above
average score on
them, we will be taken out of our elective classes.

I find that odd that you need above average scores. Does this
mean if you get average grades you can't participate in any
elective classes? Does the superintendent not understand that
most people are average, hence the term average? You mention you
will be taken out of elective classes. Does this policy extend
to sports teams? At my son's school if you don't maintain
certain grades you can't play in basketball or football games.
Do they extend the rules to these areas also? I do agree that
you need to study and do well in your core classes. However, I
don't see how taking you out of autoshop, band, home economics or
whatever your elective classes might be will benefit you. Those
who can't keep up in the basics often need the skills taught in
elective classes to survive in the future. While this may not
apply to band, it has been determined that youngsters who are
taught music do better overall in academic classes that those
with no musical knowledge. If you are serious about fighting
this rule do some research and present the superintendent, and if
need be the school board, your findings. You'll never get the
rules changed just by venting but proven published facts are hard
to dispute.
