Subj: [kl] Contra bass and extensions

Walter,

The problem is that the part also calls for a low B natural as I remember.
Dennis Smylie now owns the instrument (a Buffet) that Rosario built a new
bell for with assistance of the Powell factory in Boston

On a related topic. I made a "D" extension for my Low C contra (Leblanc).
I use it when I don't need the low C. The entire instrument responds better
and it make a GREAT ( read LOUD) low D. I used it to great advantage when
playing "St. Francois D'Assise" with the SF Opera this past fall.

The TMEA was a great success and as always I met a lot of really nice
people.

Dan Paprocki asked me about memorable film scores I have played that
required Contra. I have not recorded a lot of film scores, but the most
memorable would have to be "Mars Attacks!". Partly because it required 2
contras and on one session I played 5 different instruments!! (Eb clar., Bb
clar, bass clarinet, EEb Contra, BBb contra)

Another memorable score was "Mimic". It's a pretty horrifying movie, but
when the evil cockroach monsters are near so is the contra bass!!! Marco
Beltrami is a wonderful young composer and uses unusual instrumentation.
There are several places in the score where the bad bugs are scurrying
around and the background sound is all of the woodwinds just clicking their
keys.

Some of my other credits (playing contra and bass clarinet)

Jurassic Park III
Inspector Gadget
Sphere
The Faculty
Harry Potter (just "touch ups" great John Williams score and HARD!)

There are some others that I cannot dredge up from my weakening memory.
