I just got a call to do this show. The musical director told me book I
was flute and pic. Book II is oboe and English horn. Because of budget
restraints, I don't think they're going to have a player for Book III,
which I was told, is a straight clarinet book. I'll be doing book IV
which is clarinet, bass clarinet and flute. I'll probably also have to
pull some stuff out of the dedicated clarinet book.

What I want to know is how hard the flute licks are. For years I've been
pursuing the low winds and playing the low parts (own and play, bass
clarinet to low C, low A bari, bassoon, bass sax, contra alto clarinet
and contra-bass clarinet in BBb to a written low D), and because of
that, have let my flute chops go to pot. Flute is one of those
instruments that absolutely require DAILY maintenance, and I've chosen
to spend a large part of my life and time making bassoon reeds.

I don't want to lunch on the flute part, and am even considering buying
a new Sankyo flute. I'm also planning on hitting the practice room every
day from now until May 1st, when the show starts. Books won't be
available until the first part of April.

Again, if anyone can report on the difficulty of the flute parts in Reed
Book IV, I'd like your take on it.

Thanks,

Richard Bush
